Why do we do what we do?

A founder’s rant…

Climate change is real. The ice is melting, the earth is warming, and seas are rising. There is enough data, research and evidence to show that changing the way we grow, distribute, process, share, cook, and eat food can make a difference. It is not the only solution to reduce green house gases. But food has become an agent of change.

Is there hope? We take food for granted. Unlike civilisations of the past, we have become disconnected from our food sources. How often do we make the connection between the food on our plates and the state of our planet? How is food grown? Who grows my food? What goes into producing food? How far has my food traveled? How much food do we waste? How does farming and fishing impact forests and oceans? How are our regional rice, fruit, vegetable, fish and meat “baskets” coping environmentally and socio-economically? Does it matter?

Should we care? And how can we make a difference through our food choices? These questions piled up in my head and heart as I began my permaculture design and parenting journey. I wanted to make it my business to unpack these questions, provide solutions and inspire action.

How do we do better in urban centers? I'd like to think the work we do like cultivating food in urban spaces, creating conversations, inspiring action, connectedness and awareness around food systems and climate change can help.

Help people become a producer, not just a mere consumer of food. This was the premise of starting Cultivate Central; to make growing food, working with soil second nature again. To create a “grow, cook and make your own” culture in different spaces, communities and contexts.

I’ve been at this since 2013 when Cultivate Central was a mere blog. And along the way built a reputation for designing, developing and delivering engaging lesson plans, workshops and community programmes.

As a society we have the tools, resources, solutions and knowledge to tackle issues. Now it is on to the doing. Cultivate Central has worked on creating methods, solutions, kits, programmes, content and collaborations with talented, like minded and passionate practitioners and educators.

If you, your company, the school your child goes to or the organisation you lead are looking to invest in an Eco-initiative; start with a regenerative food garden or spark a transformational movement through eco learning experiences and conversations about food.

I've made it my mission to help care for the health of people and planet by imagining and creating practical local regenerative food utopias, spaces, commons, communities and systems. But I cannot do this alone.

You can make a difference. There are many ways to start. Start by addressing food waste and diets, protecting ecosystems and learning about how your food choices can shift agriculture practices. Or simply reach out to us.

I promise you it will make a difference.

Thanks for reading my rant. Let’s connect.

Who do we work with?

We work with schools, companies, non-profits, and the service industry to make our vision a reality, one urban food growing programme at a time.

With most of the world’s population now living in urban areas, we anchor our Permaculture Design skills to cities where we live - Singapore and Malaysia.

If you are part of a company, school or a non profit organisation, an educator, place maker, an urban designer and developer or hotelier seeking to make a difference by creating educational, intimate and green outdoor food spaces, we can help you.

If you have aspirations to create an eco-positive movement through environmental and health programmes with and for your community, we can help you.

Perhaps you are supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by exploring ecological principles of urban food production, we can help you.

If you are looking to create regenerative urban farming opportunities on a rooftop, at a school, at a hotel, in a neighbourhood, at a shopping, leisure or work space, we can help you.

We help by creating regenerative urban food gardens, deliver educational programmes, supply grow kits and shape eco-positive cultures and teams.

The Team

Nova Nelson

Founder & Chief Permaculture Designer

Nova’s love and curiosity for food and farming began as a child. She watched her grandfather, father and mother run their organic composting business. The transformation taking place in a hot compost heap never failed to astonish. Her mum was also a magnificent cook and baker. Everything was made from scratch. Food and working with one’s hands were at the centre of everything at home.

Fast forward to 2013, while producing a radio documentary called Hear and Now in Malaysia she encountered a chicken farmer who used regenerative closed loop methods on his farm. The smells, sights and abundance on this farm brought back childhood memories and ignited a wave of curiosity about all things that help us grow nourishing foods.

A profound experience. As she recalls, “I realised food is by far the biggest way individuals can make an impact. Food choices that are local, regional and regenerative can feed our bellies and restore earth. But in order to make better choices we need to work with nature and in the garden more, we need to fall in love with soil and the wonders that come with it.

One thing led to another and she got her Permaculture Design Certificate in early 2014 from The Permaculture Research Institute and applied Permaculture immediately in the urban context. And Cultivate Central was born. It began humbly as a blog. Nova shared her experiences applying Permaculture Principles in an urban city context.

It’s not been easy building a business in this field of work. Permaculture Design was not and is still not a mainstream concept. The ideas around food security and resilience only started to amplify during the pandemic. Finding the right clients and creating services without compromising her eco aspirations was challenging.

Over the past 8 years, Nova has helped organisations, preschools and schools explore Permaculture Design and create experiences inspired by gardening for children and families. Nova has also drawn strength from her corporate and NGO experiences and created community engagement frameworks to help companies and organisations engage communities, raise eco-stewardship and build an eco-positive footprint in urban areas through food growing programmes.

With a reputation for designing, developing, and delivering engaging lesson plans, workshops, community programmes, Nova currently spends more time creating urban farming solutions and building communities in action. She experiments and demonstrates closed loop urban farming solutions at the Goodman Community Farm.

Nova is recipient of an SG Eco Fund Grant 2022 for a project she calls Closed Loop Collective. And is also a Fellow in Margaret Atwood’s Practical Utopias: An Exploration of the Possible where she will gain an opportunity to learn and collaborate with 200 changemakers from around the globe to unlock practical solutions to some of humanity’s biggest challenges, the climate crisis being foremost.

When she’s not “working”, Nova loves cooking, fermenting foods, dabbling in pottery, binge listening to podcasts and music, kettlebell swinging and spending time with family.

Priya

Community Building & Chief Operations

Growing up in urban India, Priya had a typical upbringing with focus on academics, some sports and loads of happy family meals. Having chosen her field in finance, Priya found her footing in the big exciting world of investment and finance until she moved to Singapore and had her two beautiful girls. Time with family took precedence over career aspirations. Prone to being a workaholic, it was time for Priya to look for work that could strike a balance between work and family. Having found her love to be surrounded by curious children, she found the perfect person to work with in Nova. Nova’s passion in bringing a positive change to the society, constant zeal to create solutions that were applicable in the real world and love for everything health and food related sparked an instant connection.

Priya is now involved in bringing together communities and getting their involvement through the urban farm spaces that Cultivate Central builds. She also manages the logistics involved in all the workshops and builds. She also runs workshops offered by Cultivate Central for children and adults as she continues to learn more about urban farming techniques, use of different materials, waste management as well as community engagement.

When she is not working, you will find Priya plugged into her earphones listening to music, playing with her girls who she feels are growing too fast, reading the latest fiction book in the market or entertaining friends with plenty of food to go around!

Sheryn Law

Finance and Administration

After 25 years of working in the advertising industry as an administrator and traffic manager, Sheryn finally ‘retired’ and found her calling in what she believes is the best job ever - freelancing with the best bosses and most wonderful colleagues. Working home gives her a good balance of leisure time and flexibility to fulfil her passion for travel as she slowly ticks off her bucket list.

Sheryn says, “I have learnt a lot from Cultivate Central about gardening and growing food in small spaces. It has been a pleasure to have stayed on this journey with Cultivate Central as we have grown from a small set-up to one where we have connected so many communities in the city to nature, nurtured a growing culture and contributed to a better environment through urban food gardens. I feel extremely proud and fulfilled being a part of the dedicated team at Cultivate Central.”

Finally, Sheryn lives by the motto: “Life is a gift, but living is a choice.”

Tamanna

Content Cultivator

Tamanna enjoys reading, writing, yoga, being outdoors, and of course gardening. She's on a mission to grow as much of her own food as possible and get composting on a balcony right! It's all a work in progress for her and she dreams of one day owning a piece of land far, far away from the hustle and bustle of cities to cultivate veggies, maybe rear some animals, and watch the stars sparkle in light pollution-free night skies. In the meanwhile, she's happy being content cultivator at Cultivate Central.
