July 2016, Cultivate Central designed and created an urban garden pop up called Growing Heritage for Think Green, a community engagement programme by Eastern & Oriental Berhad. It was an ode to Penang's unique heritage through a compact and unique installation of herbs and spices. We installed the pop up garden at the Straits Quay mall and the garden was used as a backdrop for an Urban Gardening Workshop for the Think Green community.
Growing Heritage was designed by Cultivate Central and brought to you by Think Green, a long term E&O community education programme. The Urban Gardening Workshop was carried out by Cultivate Central.
Workshop participants spent time observing and sketching different design elements of the urban garden. They explored and participated in hands on urban gardening techniques such as making sub irrigation planters, composting cylinders, designing self watering PVC pipe planters and transplanted herbs which they grew a few months back. Two months before the pop up garden installation 28 varieties of herbs and about 120 seedlings were propagated assisted by our local project partners Consumers' Association Penang (CAP).
